Frequently Asked Questions

The wax shade is made from an ultra-hard wax with a high melting point and is designed to retain its form when used with Kindred Lantern candles. These purpose-designed candles burn with a steady flame for at least 12 hours, providing a bright, even glow without excessive smoke or heat.

Kindred Lantern brings together two Melbourne studios united by a commitment to thoughtful making and continual improvement. We believe sustainability is not about perfection, but about making conscious choices and considering our impact on people and planet.
Unearthed Ceramics powers its Preston garden studio with 100% renewable electricity and has invested in a highly energy-efficient kiln to reduce energy consumption. Clay and water waste are carefully managed, soft plastics are recycled, and the studio contributes 1% of revenue through Stripe Climate to support carbon removal initiatives.
A Little Light operates from a purpose-built, 7-star energy-efficient backyard workshop, with most of its electricity supplied by rooftop solar and additional power sourced through Energy Locals. Guided by a belief that reuse is preferable to recycling, the studio partners with local businesses and individuals to gather, reuse, and share packaging materials, helping to minimise waste and reduce reliance on new soft plastics wherever possible.
Like the lantern itself, we see sustainability as a long-term practice — one shaped by many small, thoughtful decisions rather than a pursuit of perfection.

Every aspect of Kindred Lantern has been thoughtfully considered with sustainability and longevity in mind.
Each lantern is housed within a bespoke hand-painted storage tube, designed by Claire Quirk and created to protect and accompany the piece through life's many chapters. Intended for safekeeping and reuse, the tube is an integral part of the Kindred Lantern experience.
We have sought to minimise plastic throughout our packaging, choosing recyclable, compostable, and reusable materials wherever possible, including recycled tissue paper, paper-based protective wrap, water-soluble packing fill, and water-activated paper tape. Our postcards by PrintTogether are produced in Australia using recycled card and non-toxic inks. We intentionally work with businesses whose values align with our own. This includes Heaps Good Packaging, who plant a tree with every order through their partnership with Greenspark as they work towards carbon neutrality.
While most packaging components can be composted or recycled through kerbside collection, some elements — including the reusable tube lids and product labels — are not currently suitable for standard kerbside recycling.

Kindred Lantern was born from a desire to create a beautiful object that reveals the makers' hands and intentions at every point of contact. Created through a slow and deliberate process, the project brings together two disciplines through a shared language of texture.
Katrina Carling's hand-etched ceramics meet the warm translucence of Jo Schoof's organic wax forms, creating a luminous object that is both functional and sculptural.
This thoughtful approach extends beyond the lantern itself. From the hand-painted storage tube to the hand-sewn Japanese washi paper booklet, every detail has been considered with longevity, craftsmanship, and sustainability in mind.
-
Kindred Lantern candles are hand-poured in Melbourne using a blend of fully refined paraffin wax and sustainably sourced RSPO-certified palm wax.
This combination was carefully chosen for its ability to produce a clean, steady flame and the quality of light needed to illuminate the wax lantern. Different waxes possess different characteristics, and over more than 25 years of candle making, Jo has selected materials based on their performance, longevity, and suitability for the piece.
